By M. Goetz
I spent several months looking at CD/DVD storage units online and in stores, and finally settled on this one (shipped from Target). I paid $27.95 + $27.95 for shipping. That sounds like a lot to pay for shipping, but trust me, there's not many units like this for under $60 in stores. Most I've seen are closer to $100, so I think the value is great, even when paying nearly $28 to ship it. This unit is attractive and holds a surprise number of CD's or DVD's. I thought my CD's would fill this thing up, but there are still 2 empty rows!As far as construction, it's not the best, but not the worst either. I have noticed after having CD's on it for a month that the shelves are sagging slightly. It's not bad enough that most people would notice, but I am worried it's going to get much worse over time. Then again, all composite wood furniture I've ever had has done this. If you want something that's going to last forever, you need to spend a LOT more money and buy something with wood, metal or glass shelves. Again, I think this unit is a great value even though it's not the highest quality out there. This unit also came with a bracket and screws for mounting to the wall, which I did. It doesn't really give you clear instructions for how to mount it to the wall, but I figured it out pretty easily. I definitely suggest mounting it to a wall - you don't want it getting knocked over with 400 CD's on it!Long story short, this is a great storage unit for the price. Buy it.

By Jon Bastian
Having a huge DVD collection, I looked for a long time for the perfect storage units without luck. A lot of bookcases are designed to be multipurpose, which is great if you've got VHS tapes (who does?) or want to store books, CDs and DVDs together -- the problem is, those arrangements waste a lot of space, so cut down on the storage. Consequently, I kept seeing units that would either hold a hundred DVDs for 1.5 times the price of this unit, or a single unit that would hold about two thirds of my collection, but which was also very expensive and huge, and I didn't feel like spending close to six hundred dollars while overpowering my media room with a pair of behemoths. The Sauder Multimedia Storage Tower is designed specifically for DVD or CD storage with fully adjustable shelves, and I mean fully -- unlike other units, the peg holes on the sides start a couple of inches up from the bottom, then go in about one inch increments all the way up. No wasted space for a DVD collection here. It's also shallow enough that the DVDs are flush with the front, so bonus points for ease of use, as well as saving space. I've seen other comments here saying that it doesn't hold as many DVDs as advertised, but I was able to get 250 DVDs into each of two of mine (not filling the third), give or take a few titles, of course, for box sets and the like.Assembly was very easy. I did each unit myself in under half an hour. Now, I have had a lot of experience with flat-pack furniture, but if you can follow instructions and can use a screwdriver (standard and Philips) and a hammer, you're all set. A tape measure also helps if you want to be precise on placing the nails on the backing. There are exactly five steps in the instructions, clearly illustrated and written in English, French and Spanish. Finally, they are very generous with the spare screws, nails, etc., that come with the unit. I used everything listed in the instructions and still had extras left over -- great for those of you with fumbly fingers and shag carpets. If you configure it for DVDs only, you'll also have two extra shelves to do with as you please. (I'm thinking of making a three-shelf wall unit or shoe rack out of the six extra I have.)I do have a couple of caveats on assembly, but nothing that would make me give this a negative rating. First, the page that comes after step 1 is *not* step 2, it shows how to tighten the camlocks. However, it can be a little unclear that you should not tighten them until after step two. Doing so before that may damage the heads of the cam pins, which are designed with a plastic flange that is meant to flare out and secure it in the hole on the top of the unit, somewhat like a drywall screw. Also, as with every other piece of flatpack furniture that uses a cardboard backing, putting in all 28 nails can be tedious, and a bit awkward if you're trying to do it on the floor. I wouldn't really consider this a problem specific to this product, though, and I have yet to see any other company come up with a better backing solution. Finally, the wooden pieces were a bit saw-dusty in the box -- however, the last step of the instructions indicates that this wasn't a fluke, just the way they wind up packed, and the shelves wipe clean with a damp cloth.Otherwise, it's a very attractive piece with a gloss finish and a nice rounded edge on the top and bottom pieces. The top is flush with the sides, while the bottom extends out a few inches, presumably for stability. Once loaded, it does seem fairly stable, although I would still recommend using the included angle bracket and screws to secure it to a wall, especially if you live in an area prone to earthquakes. (I don't know whether it would be more or less stable without the optional feet installed. My units are on hardwood floors, but the feet are probably not the way to go on carpet.) Also, if you're not going to fully load it yet, go from bottom to top, again for stability. I knew I'd fill the first one completely, so sorted my collection into it alphabetically, but had to hold it steady when the top shelves were fuller than the bottom. If, like me, you've got a large DVD collection that you want to store in an economical and attractive way, then this unit is hard to beat. I had about 39 linear feet of DVDs to store, and three units did the job with plenty of room to spare. The shallow profile and just under four foot height is very appealing, making then unobtrusive while displaying your collection to its full advantage. Sauder Multimedia Storage Tower Cinnamon Cherry

I was pretty nervous purchasing this after reading some of the reviews, but we desperately needed something to hold our DVD's and I figured that if it wasn't good quality, I'd only be out $45. Luckily, its not bad at all! It is shorter than it appears, but that's only because the picture shows CD's rather than DVD's. I'm 5'8 and the case comes up to about my chest. If you plan on storing DVD's as opposed to CD's, you can only use four of the shelves, but that's still not too bad on storage space, and with the price, you could always buy two and sit them side by side. It is decently sturdy, but less so on carpet. Assembly was super easy, though the instructions were a little confusing at times. Nonetheless, I assembled it without any problems. I'm very pleased with my purchase. Its obviously not as nice as a $200 case, but its not horrible quality. The best thing about this product, is that even with Standard Shipping, it came in TWO DAYS. I ordered it on a Sunday night and it came on a Tuesday afternoon.
